Heaven Crawley

Professor Heaven Crawley FAcSS is a Visiting Research Fellow at Coventry University's Centre for Peace and Security and an independent research consultant, most recently working with UNRISD and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

She was previously Head of Equitable Development and Migration at the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research in New York and, from 2019 to 2024, Director of the £20 million UKRI-funded South-South Migration, Inequality and Development Hub (MIDEQ). MIDEQ brought together researchers and partners across 12 countries to better understand the relationships between migration, inequality and development in the Global South.

Earlier in her career, Heaven was Professor of International Migration at Coventry University and Swansea University, Associate Director at the Institute for Public Policy Research and Head of Asylum and Migration Research at the UK Home Office. She has served as a specialist adviser to the UK Parliament's Home Affairs Committee and Joint Committee on Human Rights and as a patron or trustee of organisations working with refugees and migrants, including the Baobab Centre for Young Survivors in Exile, Asylum Justice and Migrant Voice.

Her publications focus on migration, inequality and displacement, including the drivers of migration and migrant decision-making, gender and forced migration, refugee and migrant rights, the experiences of children and young people on the move, public attitudes towards migration, and the politics of migration policymaking.

She holds degrees from the University of Sussex and a doctorate from the University of Oxford. In 2012, she was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) in recognition of her contribution to the social sciences and evidence-based policymaking.
