ASEZA Oversees Plan To Clear Unclaimed Containers At ACT

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN - Chief Commissioner of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) Shadi Majali on Thursday inspected progress on a plan to transfer unclaimed containers from the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT).

The field visit was attended by ASEZA Commissioner for Economic Development and Investment Affairs Mohammad Abu Omar.

During the tour, ASEZA Director of Storage Raed Theyabat briefed officials on performance indicators, operational milestones and results achieved to date, according to an ASEZA statement.

The plan implements recommendations from a joint coordination meeting held with the Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, the Minister of Transport, and key commercial, maritime and logistics stakeholders.

The measures are in line with Prime Ministerial directives to monitor operational conditions at ACT and ensure the clearance of unclaimed units, particularly transit freight, from the terminal to the former free zone site.

Targeting the removal of 1,500 to 2,000 containers, the scheme has so far relocated around 1,100 units, while nearly 200 have completed customs clearance.

The ongoing transfers have eased congestion across ACT yards and streamlined overall container handling.

As a result, yard capacity utilisation dropped from 102 per cent before the plan was implemented to around 80 per cent, reflecting a "tangible" improvement in operational flow and storage capacity.

Container dwell times also recorded a "marked" improvement. Transit container dwell time fell from 14 to 12 days, while import container dwell time decreased from 11 to 8.5 days, highlighting the efficiency of expedited handling procedures.

Majali underscored the need to adhere to the implementation schedule in close coordination with all relevant entities to clear the remaining unclaimed cargo and maintain ACT's readiness to receive container vessels without disruption.

Enhancing operational efficiency at the terminal remains a strategic priority for ASEZA, directly supporting national trade flows, maritime shipping and Aqaba's logistics ecosystem, Majali added.
