Income Tax Portal Launches Dedicated Mechanism To Report Corruption, Misconduct By Officials
The facility allows complainants to provide details including the name and designation of the concerned officer, along with a description of the incident.
Complaints Can Be Filed Online
The grievance mechanism includes categories such as corruption, misbehaviour, harassment and sexual harassment, providing taxpayers with a structured channel to report inappropriate conduct by tax officials.
Taxpayers Can Submit Complaints Through e-Filing Portal
Registered taxpayers can access the facility by logging into the Income Tax e-Filing Portal and navigating to Grievances. They can select the relevant department, category and subcategory, provide the required details and submit the complaint.
The portal also provides a pre-login grievance facility for individuals without a PAN or TAN. Such complainants can provide their name, email address and mobile number, complete OTP verification and submit their grievance.
Grievance Status Can Be Tracked
According to the portal's help material, grievances can generally relate to the e-Filing system, Assessing Officer, CPC-ITR and CPC-TDS.
Electronic verification is not required merely to submit a grievance. Complaints filed through both pre-login and post-login modes can be tracked using the acknowledgement details.
Calls For Similar Mechanism On GST Portal
The move could also strengthen calls for introducing a similar facility on the GST Portal, where businesses regularly interact with officials over registration, scrutiny, audits, inspections, investigations, refunds and recovery proceedings.
