New Collectors Drive Up 20Th-Century Modernism Prices

(MENAFN- USA Art News) A growing number of collectors are pursuing major works by leading 20th-century Modernist artists, leading to increased prices, according to art advisor Jussi Pylkkänen. This shift is expected to play out during the fall auction season, which traditionally begins in September and features major events such as Frieze Week and London auctions in mid-October, Art Basel Paris a week later, and New York's marquee auctions in November.

Pylkkänen, who served as global president at Christie's from 2014 to 2023 before co-founding Art Pylkkänen in 2024, observed that established collectors are prioritizing blue-chip artists and moving away from speculative, short-lived trends. A new generation of buyers, previously active at fairs like Frieze and Art Basel for contemporary works, is now also focusing on significant pieces by 20th-century masters. This change in taste coincides with more than 30 estates in America and Europe divesting major Modernist artworks over the past year, with additional consignments anticipated this autumn.

This renewed interest helps explain recent price increases for paintings and works on paper by artists including Pablo Picasso, René Magritte, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Joan Miró. Pylkkänen anticipates that London and New York sales will see strong results, with around $2 billion worth of art potentially changing hands in just six weeks, setting the market's trajectory for months.

Recent auction successes, such as Sotheby's $392.6 million Lewis Collection sale in June and the $136 million Pauline Karpidas Collection last September, both significantly exceeded their estimates. Pylkkänen also expects the market for prominent American postwar artists to strengthen in November, watching for price consolidation in Lichtenstein works and continued growth for artists like Warhol, Joan Mitchell, and Willem de Kooning.

Only about 120 artists defined or led major 20th-century art movements, with approximately 30 achieving similar prominence in the first quarter of the 21st century. These artists are driving current high prices. Two recently announced masterpieces, Piet Mondrian's Composition III and Wassily Kandinsky's Das bunte Leben (A Colorful Life), are heading to Christie's London this October and are expected to perform well in the current market for rare, museum-quality works.

Keith Gill, Christie's Vice Chairman of 20th Century Art, stated in a press release that Mondrian's Composition III is one of the last privately owned works from 1920, a year when the artist believed he had perfected the essence of beauty in a series of eight paintings. Five of these eight are now in major museums, and this particular piece was exhibited for years at the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Krefeld. Given Mondrian's appeal to both classical Modernism and contemporary art buyers, this painting will likely create direct competition between established and new-generation collectors. Christie's has quoted a low estimate of £20 million ($27 million) for the work; a previous 1920s Mondrian from the S.I. Newhouse Collection sold for significantly more than its estimate to a new Asian collector.

Kandinsky's Das bunte Leben (A Colorful Life), a large 1907 canvas, was displayed at the Lenbachhaus for many years before its restitution last year to the heirs of Hedwig Lewenstein-Weyermann. Its positive subject, extensive history, and excellent condition support its $30 million estimate. Traditionally, early Kandinsky works have been sought by Swiss, German, and Russian collectors. With Russian collectors less active in the market, museums or astute collectors may have a unique chance to acquire such a work at a reasonable price.

Pylkkänen also noted that a major collector plans to consign a significant group of Modernist works to London this season, with further details pending. This single-owner collection is anticipated to provide additional insights into evolving collecting tastes.

New York's November sales are set to feature several major estates and are expected to command high prices for top 20th-century artists. These sales will also test the market for important Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings. While not formally announced, Artnet's Katya Kazakina reported last month that Sotheby's New York will offer numerous significant works from the Blaquier Collection, including exceptional pieces by artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, and Edgar Degas. Works by leading artists that have been off the market for 50 years typically generate substantial competition and invigorate the broader market. If estimates are appealing, the Blaquier Collection is expected to perform very well.

Pylkkänen highlights three consecutive seasons, New York in November 2025 and May 2026, and London in June 2026, as evidence that top collectors are actively pursuing the finest paintings in every sale, often exceeding expectations. The art market's value is driven by paintings traded between $20 million and $100 million. In the last 36 months, Christie's has conducted private sales of works by Magritte and Van Gogh within this price range. Public sales by Sotheby's have included Klimts and Matisses from Leonard Lauder's collection, as well as works by Modigliani, Picasso, Bacon, Magritte, and Freud from the Lewis Collection. Dealers and advisors have also handled works by Picasso, de Kooning, Claude Monet, André Derain, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Mark Rothko at similar price points.

Pylkkänen concludes that there is a return to order in the market, with knowledgeable collectors confidently competing for the best classic modern works. He predicts that the autumn sales in London and New York will continue this pursuit of high-quality paintings, noting that investing in the best art is a wise decision, even if the initial purchase price seems high. Pylkkänen has sold some of the world's most expensive paintings, including the $450 million Salvator Mundi.
