Sajid Rashidi Criticises Gitanjali Angmo Over Vande Mataram Remarks, BJP Lends Support
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), welcomed Angmo's opinion, while questioning objection to the rendition of the national song.
In an exclusive interview to IANS, Gitanjali Angmo said that the opposition to Vande Mataram by some sections because of references to Hindu Gods, "is a childish way of thinking".
"If we read or learn a ghazal and sing it in Urdu, it is not as if a Hindu singing it would have their religion corrupted. Similarly, if we read any shloka or something and associate it with a particular party or with Sanskrit, then that is also very wrong. Sanskrit is a language, so what is the problem?" she asked.
Emphasising that singing of the full version of the national song is necessary, Gitanjali Angmo said: "The first two stanzas were initially chosen because the song was too long. It doesn't mean that the remaining stanzas were not accepted. You cannot cut any work of art," adding that for her the song is a "very profound symbol"."
Reacting to Sonam Wangchuk's wife's statement, Muslim cleric Sajid Rashidi told IANS: "I want to teach something to those who are uneducated and do not have information. Ghazals contain romantic verses. It does not contain worship of anyone. So, comparing that with Vande Mataram is somewhere based on misinformation, it is unfortunate, regrettable and objectionable. You are comparing romantic verses with the worship of deities."
Asserting that the Muslim community cannot sing a song which worships Hindu goddesses, he said: "Even if the President of the country says that Muslims should sing it, we will still not do so because it is against our faith. The Constitution of the country allows that if something is against your faith, whether you sing it or not is your own choice."
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson R. P. Singh backed Gitanjali Angmo, saying that Vande Mataram does contain the mention of Hindu deities.
However, he told IANS that the context of the reference to the deities need to be carefully looked into.
"Maa Durga is mentioned in the context of courage, of fighting enemies," Singh added.
"What is the problem with singing Vande Mataram? This song brought freedom to the country. Today, Congress and the Muslim League are running away from that same song. This is not right," he said.
According to Aam Aadmi Party leader Priyanka Kakkar, the controversy over rendition of the Vande Mataram should now end as it has now been mandated under a law.
