Helen Mccabe

My background is in the history of political thought, particularly the work of John Stuart Mill and Harriet Taylor. Most of my research focuses on their socialism and their writing relationship. Since 2018 I have led the work on forced marriage being done by the Rights Lab, a University of Nottingham Beacon of Research Excellence, and home to the world's largest group of inter-disciplinary scholars working to end modern slavery by 2030. I won an AHRC Fellowship aimed at understanding the link between forced marriage and modern slavery, which is frequently made but not clearly justified, looking at the issue from a conceptual and legal perspective, and from the perspective of those who have experienced forced marriage. I have also worked on more empirical projects connected to understanding the impact of Covid-19 on people experiencing, or at risk of, a forced marriage; data-collection on Honour-Based Abuse; prevelance-estimation, and legal response, as well as working via arts-based methods with survivors on understanding how survivor voice can safely and ethically be at the heart of movements to end exploitation.
