RVC Deputy Commander Plotted Assassination Of Russian Opposition Leader - SSU

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU).

As part of its systematic counter-sabotage efforts, the SSU worked to prevent the assassination, which had been planned by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) to take place on Ukraine's Independence Day.

The SSU obtained the relevant information through operational channels.

In particular, contacts were uncovered between the deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps of the International Legion under the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and Russian special services. The individual in question was to prepare an assassination attempt against one of the leaders of the Russian opposition movement, who was scheduled to arrive in Ukraine at that time, the SSU emphasized.

According to available evidence, during his communications with representatives of Russian special services, this servicemember was tasked with eliminating other members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in exchange for monetary compensation.

Thanks to the SSU's proactive efforts, the preparation of the crime was stopped in time, the statement said.

Subsequently, a series of counterintelligence verification measures was carried out with the participation of the aforementioned servicemember.

“In the process, this individual admitted to having contacts with the FSB of the Russian Federation and provided the SBU with relevant information. This allowed the Ukrainian security service to identify the entire chain of individuals involved in the planned crime. The Security Service documented the suspect's correspondence with an FSB representative on his phone,” the SSU emphasized.

Given this military serviceman's admission of contacts with the FSB of the Russian Federation and his cooperation with the investigation, no preventive measure was applied against him.

“While SSU officers were conducting urgent investigative actions to collect and document evidence of the aforementioned criminal offense, a completely unacceptable conflict arose, which led to gunfire. This definitely should not have happened,” the Ukrainian security service stated.

The State Bureau of Investigations is currently investigating this incident.

The Security Service of Ukraine is providing maximum assistance to the investigation to ensure an objective and impartial determination of all the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As previously reported, the SSU stated that, together with the Main Intelligence Directorate (DIU), it had thwarted a terrorist attack that Russia's FSB was planning against one of the leaders of the Russian opposition political national movement, who had arrived in Ukraine to mark Independence Day.

Meanwhile, according to Ukrainska Pravda, a shootout occurred in the Dnipro district of Kyiv between representatives of the SSU and the DIU. According to the publication's sources, three DIU representatives were wounded.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that following the shootout between the SSU and the DIU, the heads of these agencies must take appropriate personnel decisions regarding those involved in the incident.

The head of state also dismissed Oleh Khramov from his positio as head of the SSU's Department for the Protection of State Secrets and Licensing.
