Russia Signs Contract To Build Kazakhstan's 1St Nuclear Power Plant
MOSCOW, Sept 3 (NNN-Anadolu) -- Russia and Kazakhstan signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract Thursday for the construction of Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant, Anadolu Ajansi reported, citing Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom.
The contract for the Balkhash nuclear power plant was signed on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok by Rosatom's Atomstroyexport engineering company and Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants, a Rosatom statement said.
It said Rosatom will lead an international consortium and oversee the full project cycle, from design and construction to commissioning of the completed plant.
The Balkhash plant will comprise two power units equipped with Russian-designed VVER-1200 Generation III+ reactors, with a combined capacity of 2.4 gigawatts, according to the statement.
Engineering surveys are currently underway at the site. Once completed, preparations will begin for documents required to obtain a construction licence for the reactors, the company said.
The project marks a major step in Russia-Kazakhstan cooperation in the nuclear energy sector.
