Croatian PM Denounces Tributes to Convicted War Criminal Mladic
(MENAFN) Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic condemns public tributes to convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic, arguing that Serbia has yet to undergo a process of “catharsis,” according to reports.
Plenkovic comments on the gatherings in Banja Luka, where more than 1,000 people reportedly assemble to honor Mladic following his death.
The Croatian premier says Serbian officials and the public reacted strongly to his earlier remarks in Bled, Slovenia, where he criticized the praise given to Mladic and the decision to portray his funeral as a national event.
Plenkovic recalls that Mladic was convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague of genocide committed in Srebrenica and held responsible for grave crimes carried out as part of the policies pursued by former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic.
“By glorifying and giving a national character to the funeral of Ratko Mladic, convicted in The Hague for the genocide in Srebrenica, who carried out Milosevic’s policy and was responsible for the most serious crimes, and by giving him such eulogies and lamenting for him, Serbia shows that not only has it not gone through catharsis,” Plenkovic said.
“It has not even taken a step toward where it wants to be. And it certainly won’t happen like this,” he added, stressing that Croatia is not the only country to share this assessment.
