SINGAPORE - Ellerton & Co has appointed former TechCrunch editor and venture capital investor Jon Russell as executive director, as the independent agency expands its technology, venture capital, crypto and investor communications capabilities.
Bangkok-based Russell joins Ellerton after spending the past three years as an independent marketing and content consultant. He previously spent more than a decade in journalism, including roles at TechCrunch, The Ken and The Next Web, covering technology, startups, venture capital, fintech, crypto and Southeast Asia's digital economy.
Russell subsequently moved into venture capital, including a stint with Crypto Capital. He continues to write for Asia Tech Review, a newsletter focused on technology, startups and investment in the region.
At Ellerton, Russell will work across areas including venture capital, startups, crypto and technology, while adding senior media and content expertise to the agency's leadership team.
"Technology companies in Asia don't just need more press coverage. They need clearer stories," said Russell. "Founders and investors are operating across fragmented markets, with tighter funding conditions and a shrinking media landscape. Ellerton has built an impressive reputation in the last decade, and I look forward to helping grow the business around further still."
His appointment comes as Ellerton broadens its offering beyond traditional earned media. The agency launched Ellerton Creative Studio earlier this year and has also expanded into investor relations, founder positioning, owned content, narrative development and go-to-market communications.
"Jon has spent his career understanding how technology businesses in Asia are built, funded and communicated," said Ellerton managing partner Oliver Ellerton. "That combination of editorial judgement, investor perspective and founder empathy will strengthen the counsel we provide to clients."
Partner Prayaank Gupta added that Russell's experience across media and PR would support the agency's earned and owned communications work.
"We've been very measured in how we grow, bringing in consultants who can deliver exemplary work for a global client base," said Gupta. "Jon understands media and PR from the inside, and across a wide spread of industries."
Russell's appointment follows a series of leadership and service expansions at Ellerton this year. In April, founder Oliver Ellerton was elevated to managing partner, while Michael de Waal-Montgomery and Gupta were appointed partners.
The Singapore-headquartered agency now has more than 30 consultants across nearly 10 Asian markets, including Southeast Asia, India, Hong Kong and Japan. It is also a member of the GlobalCom PR Network, through which it supports clients in more than 100 countries.
