Former Cuban Leader Reportedly Battles Critical Health Condition
(MENAFN) Former Cuban leader Raul Castro is reportedly in critical condition after apparently suffering a stroke, according to reports, although the claims have not been independently verified.
A confidential source in Havana reportedly says the 95-year-old former president is seriously ill and receiving life support. Cuban authorities have not publicly confirmed or commented on the reports concerning his health.
The reports emerge only weeks after Castro makes a rare public appearance in Havana during events commemorating the 100th anniversary of his brother Fidel Castro’s birth.
Castro appears alongside current Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel at a ceremony held at the Karl Marx Theater on Aug. 13.
Raul Castro serves as Cuba’s president from 2008 to 2018 after succeeding Fidel Castro, who temporarily hands over presidential powers to his brother in 2006 following a serious illness.
Even after leaving the presidency, Raul remains an influential figure in Cuba’s political leadership. He serves as first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 2011 until 2021.
Diaz-Canel takes over as party leader in 2021, having already succeeded Raul as president three years earlier. His rise marks the first time in decades that Cuba is governed by a leader from outside the Castro family.
