UN Chief Raises Alarm Over Renewed US-Iran Military Escalation
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expresses deep concern over a renewed exchange of fire between the United States and Iran overnight, while warning about reports of civilian deaths and injuries, including an alleged strike on a wedding ceremony in Iran.
"I can tell the secretary-general is gravely concerned by the renewed exchange of fire overnight between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The secretary-general is deeply alarmed by reports of civilian casualties, including a strike that reportedly hit a wedding ceremony in Iran," a UN spokesperson says during a news conference.
"The secretary-general condemns all attacks against civilians. He recalls that all parties must respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution," the spokesperson adds.
The UN says the latest escalation is affecting countries across the region, with several states facing disruptions to their airspace and major shipping routes.
"few countries in the region are immune to this escalation, with airspace and critical shipping routes continuing to be heavily impacted."
Guterres also renews his appeal for an immediate halt to military operations and calls on all sides to avoid actions or statements that could further intensify the already tense situation.
"He reiterates his call for an immediate cessation of military action and urges all concerned to exercise restraint and refrain from action and rhetoric that could further escalate already high tensions."
The UN chief warns that any additional escalation could have severe consequences for civilians both in the region and beyond.
