Mexico Detains Suspect In Cartel-Linked Car Bombing
Mexico City: Mexican authorities on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of a suspect in a car bomb attack attributed to the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The blast in Ojocaliente, in Zacatecas state, injured two police officers and eight civilians when it occurred overnight Sunday.
Authorities said a man parked a vehicle loaded with explosives behind a police patrol car, left the engine running, and walked away.
The vehicle exploded minutes later, causing extensive damage to the police station, other vehicles, and nearby homes. Three of the ten injured are still in hospital.
During a "major operation" on Monday, state police arrested a person who "appears to be involved in these events," Zacatecas District Attorney Cristian Camacho said in a radio interview.
Local government officials had announced the arrest late Monday.
Camacho linked Sunday's car bombing to the arrest the previous day of an 18-year-old man who claimed to be a hitman for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
It was not immediately clear if the detainee is suspected to be the driver of the explosives-laden car. AFP asked the prosecutor's office but did not immediately receive a reply.
