Supporting Children With Autism Through Back-To-School Transition
Doha, Qatar: The first days and weeks of a new school year can be a significant adjustment for any child. But for children with autism, changes in routine, sensory demands, and social expectations can feel particularly overwhelming.
As the new term begins, gradual adjustments, predictable routines, and close collaboration between home and school can help make the transition smoother and more manageable.
Developmental Paediatric Fellow at Sidra Medicine – a member of Qatar Foundation (QF) Dr. Hanadi A. Al-Mutairi explains that adjustments can be introduced gradually and tailored to each child.
“For many children with autism, routine and predictability help them feel comfortable and regulated.”
Keep bedtime and waking times as consistent as possible, she explains, and if a child is struggling with the morning routine, break it down into smaller, predictable steps.
“Families can also talk through what happened during the school day, look at photographs of the school, classroom, and teacher, or use a simple visual schedule or social story. Involving the child in preparing their uniform, backpack, or lunch can also make daily routines feel more concrete and manageable.”
An autism specialist at Renad Academy – part of QF's Pre-University Education - Amani Suhail also encourages families and teachers to pay close attention to sensory demands as children settle back into school.
“The school environment can be very stimulating,” she says.“Think about your child's response to loud sounds, bright lights, strong smells, and certain clothing or textures. Discuss appropriate supportive arrangements with the school team, such as noise-reducing headphones, sensory tools, movement breaks, a quiet or calm space, and extra transition time.
“A strong partnership between home and school can make a significant difference,” says Suhail.“Ask the school team to share what they observe in the classroom.”
