Just Stop Oil Resumes Protests Outside UK Parliament
(MENAFN) Climate campaign group Just Stop Oil stages a new demonstration outside the UK Parliament on Wednesday, with police detaining dozens of protesters during the action.
The group says at least 60 demonstrators are arrested as Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces his first Prime Minister’s Questions session since taking office, according to reports.
"The action takers today are demanding that the UK government stop approving all further oil and gas developments, and sign a Fossil Fuel Treaty to Just Stop Oil," the group says in a statement.
Dozens of activists block a road in Parliament Square, while many protesters attach themselves to the pavement or roadway as part of the demonstration.
"There are a further 40+ people demonstrating in support from the pavement," the group says.
Just Stop Oil also posts footage of the protest on X, stating: “Oil and gas projects are a death sentence. The gov must sign a fossil fuel treaty.”
The Metropolitan Police gives a lower figure, saying 47 people are arrested by 4.13 p.m. local time (1513GMT) on suspicion of public order offences.
"Some remaining protesters have glued themselves to the road and specialist officers are in attendance to remove them. The road is currently closed," police say.
