Iran Says US Must Meet Commitments Before Strait of Hormuz Reopens
(MENAFN) Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf says the United States must honor its obligations under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding before Tehran takes steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“The Americans must fulfill their commitments so that we can proceed with reopening the Strait of Hormuz,” Qalibaf says during a meeting in Tehran with Basem Naim, a senior Hamas official overseeing Islamic relations, according to reports.
Discussing diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington, Qalibaf says Iran does not oppose negotiations but views them as part of a wider struggle.
“We do not reject negotiations, but negotiations are a tool for the struggle,” he says, arguing that giving up confrontation with the US and Israel in its different forms would represent “defeat.”
Qalibaf also discusses the Islamabad memorandum agreed between Iran and the United States, saying its initial provision calls for ending the war against Iran and its allies, which Tehran refers to as the “resistance front.”
He further claims that Washington initially submitted a 15-point proposal demanding that Iran completely stop its missile and nuclear programs, along with its support for allied groups across the region.
