Nigeria Records Sharp Rise in Lassa Fever Infections
(MENAFN) Nigeria records 252 deaths from Lassa fever so far this year, while the number of confirmed infections reaches 1,035, according to the country’s disease control authorities.
Fourteen additional cases are identified during epidemiological week 33, covering Aug. 10-16, pushing the total number of confirmed infections in 2026 to 1,035.
The latest infections are reported in Ondo, Edo, Bauchi and Benue states, according to the most recent situation report.
The current death toll translates to a case-fatality rate of 24.4%, marking a notable increase from the 18.6% recorded during the corresponding period last year. At that time, 159 people had died among 854 confirmed cases.
Lassa fever has now been detected in 23 states and 117 local government areas across Nigeria this year.
Five states — Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo and Benue — account for 87% of the country’s confirmed infections, while the remaining 13% are spread across 18 other states.
During the latest reporting period, health officials assess 151 suspected infections, confirm 14 cases and record two additional deaths.
The number of confirmed infections also climbs considerably from four in epidemiological week 32 to 14 in week 33, according to the latest data.
