Indonesia Vessel Fire Claims Two Crew Members in Southeast Sulawesi
(MENAFN) Two crew members lose their lives after a chemical-carrying vessel transporting heavy equipment catches fire in waters off Indonesia’s Southeast Sulawesi province, according to reports.
The KM Legenda Nusantara 99 catches fire early Tuesday while traveling from Jakarta toward Morowali in Central Sulawesi. The incident occurs in waters located between Selayar and Kabaena islands in Bombana regency.
There are 13 people aboard the vessel when the fire breaks out at around 1 a.m. local time, or 1700GMT Monday.
Authorities from the Kendari Search and Rescue Office, known as Basarnas, believe the blaze may have started following a chemical leak on the ship. The incident also exposes several crew members to hazardous fumes.
A nearby vessel, the KM KBR Benua Dua, initially rescues all 13 people from the burning ship. Search and rescue teams later arrange medical evacuations for those affected.
Yudi Bagus, 22, dies while being transported to receive medical care. The vessel’s second officer, 42-year-old John Petro, is also confirmed dead.
The captain, 42-year-old Sahriar, suffers severe chemical poisoning and is transferred to LM Baharuddin Regional Hospital in Muna for treatment, according to reports.
