Ukraine Warns of Increasing Threats to Civilian Aviation

(MENAFN) Ukraine formally alerts the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to what it describes as increasing dangers facing civilian aviation in Russian airspace amid a sharp rise in military activity.

“We call on everyone to avoid it,” Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha says in a post, warning that intensified military operations are making Russian airspace increasingly hazardous for commercial and civilian aircraft.

Sybiha says Kyiv has brought the matter before the international aviation organization following “a sharp escalation of Russia’s military activity against Ukraine.”

He also points to previous incidents as evidence of the potential dangers that military activity in the region poses to civilian aviation.

“I came to the EU ministerial meeting to deliver a kind of air-raid warning and remind everyone of the harsh realities,” Sybiha says during an informal gathering of EU foreign ministers in Ireland.

The warning comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Tuesday that Russian airspace is becoming progressively more dangerous as Ukrainian drone operations increase.

Zelenskyy calls on airlines to consider the heightened risks and says Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry will share relevant information with international organizations.
