Greenland Defends Its Right to Decide Its Own Future
(MENAFN) Greenland’s right to determine its own future faces growing pressure amid heightened geopolitical tensions surrounding the self-governing Danish territory, Foreign Minister Mute Bourup Egede says.
"We are in a situation where our right to determine our own future is at stake," Egede says during a discussion with members of the European Parliament in Brussels.
He says the uncertainty is having a significant impact on Greenland, affecting both its authorities and the broader population, including children.
"The feeling of insecurity has consequences on the mental health for some of our people," he says.
The comments come amid continued tensions over Greenland following US President Donald Trump’s renewed calls for Washington to acquire the island, describing American control of the territory as a matter of historical and strategic importance.
"Greenland will always belong to the Greenlandic people, always, and the decisions made for our future will be made by us," Egede says.
At the same time, he emphasizes that Greenland cannot remain isolated and needs reliable international partners to navigate the challenges it faces.
