Türkiye Expands Aviation Network to Strengthen Global Competitiveness
(MENAFN) Türkiye continues to rapidly expand its aviation infrastructure, using its growing network of modern airports to strengthen international connectivity, support trade and enhance the country’s position in the global economy.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu says Türkiye’s aviation sector has become an important contributor to its international competitiveness, with airports serving as key links between economies and markets.
“Our modern airport infrastructure, extending nationwide with IGA Istanbul Airport at the forefront, is our country’s vision and claim to regional leadership,” he said, highlighting connections to 356 destinations across 133 countries.
Türkiye recorded a record 247 million air passengers last year, making it Europe’s third-largest aviation market and the world’s seventh-largest, according to reports. IGA Istanbul Airport plays a major role in this growth, handling an average of 1,665 flights each day and maintaining its position as Europe’s busiest aviation hub.
The country has also continued to expand its airport network, with authorities planning to increase the total number of airports from 58 to 60.
“We opened an average of 1.4 airports per year and we won’t stop at this number – we will soon increase the number of airports from 58 to 60,” he said. “We now have air transport deals with 175 countries and added 296 new international destinations to our network in 20 years.”
