China Calls for De-Escalation, Political Settlement in Ukraine Conflict

(MENAFN) China urges Russia and Ukraine to exercise restraint and reduce tensions in an effort to create favorable conditions for resolving the conflict through political means.

“Dialogue and negotiation are the only viable solution to the Ukraine crisis,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun says, according to reports.

Beijing’s appeal comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns that Russian airspace “is becoming completely unsafe.”

“Ukraine does not threaten civilian aviation as such – not a single civilian aircraft. There will simply be drones in Russia’s skies on a scale that has to be taken into account,” he says.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin says Moscow has instructed its military to prepare for and conduct large-scale attacks against Ukrainian energy infrastructure. He describes the planned strikes as a response to what he characterizes as ongoing Ukrainian attacks targeting civilian infrastructure as well as Russian fuel and energy facilities.

“China urges relevant parties to remain calm and restrained so as to promote de-escalation of the situation immediately and accumulate conditions for the political settlement of the crisis,” Guo says.

The latest appeal follows Zelenskyy’s call last week for China to take a “strong diplomatic role” in international efforts to bring the Russia-Ukraine war to an end.
