South Korea Calls for Permanent Peace Regime on Korean Peninsula
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung renews his push to replace the armistice that halted the Korean War with a permanent peace framework aimed at ensuring long-term stability on the Korean Peninsula.
"To prevent tensions from rekindling due to shifts in domestic politics or changes in the international situation, (we) should replace the armistice, based on conflict and confrontation, with a peace regime anchored in cooperation and prosperity," Lee says, according to reports.
Speaking to members of a US-based branch of a presidential advisory body on unification in Incheon, Lee says Seoul should play a role in encouraging the resumption of dialogue between North Korea and the United States.
He argues that US President Donald Trump’s renewed engagement with Pyongyang could create an opportunity to ease deteriorating relations between the two Koreas.
"Since a possibility of a shift in the situation on the Korean Peninsula, no matter how small, has been created by President Trump's determination, we should be the one to create an environment for constructive discussions on building trust and resuming dialogue between the US and North Korea," he says.
