Russia Summons German Diplomat Amid Consulate Closure Dispute
(MENAFN) Russia summons Germany’s charge d’affaires in Moscow, Beate Finke, over what it describes as “anti-Russian actions and statements” by German authorities, according to reports.
The move follows Germany’s decision to summon Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechaev on Tuesday in connection with growing tensions between the two countries.
German officials reportedly raised concerns over an Aug. 5 incident at Leipzig Airport involving an alleged attempt to deploy a drone carrying explosives. Berlin also accused Russian state-linked structures of involvement in the suspected sabotage attempt, although Moscow says no evidence was provided to substantiate the allegation.
Germany has also indicated that it plans to introduce sanctions against Russia at both the European Union and bilateral levels in response to the incident.
As part of the measures, Germany is set to close Russia’s Consulate General in Bonn by Sept. 18 and end a 2011 bilateral agreement regulating the activities of cultural and information centers.
The termination of that agreement is expected to result in the closure of the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin. Employees working at both the consulate and the Russian House, along with their family members, have also reportedly been instructed to leave Germany.
