UK, France Strengthen Ties as Bayeux Tapestry Exhibition Opens
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron are set to attend the opening of a major Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum on Wednesday.
King Charles and Queen Camilla are also scheduled to join the event, marking the tapestry’s return to England from France for the first time in more than nine centuries.
Stretching about 70 meters (230 feet), the historic embroidered artwork was originally created in England before spending centuries in France. It depicts the events surrounding the Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
The exhibition coincides with the beginning of Macron’s two-day visit to the UK, which focuses on strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two countries and expanding cooperation on areas of mutual interest.
"The historic moment reflects the close ties between the two nations as the Prime Minister and President Macron meet for the first time to continue to deepen cooperation on shared priorities and deliver for the people of the United Kingdom and France," according to a statement.
The event also launches the British Museum’s "Bayeux Around Britain" initiative, which aims to take the story and significance of the historic tapestry to communities throughout the country.
"The return of the Bayeux Tapestry to England is a landmark moment in the history of our two nations, and I want people everywhere in the country to be able to enjoy it," Burnham said.
