Man Pays Homemaker Wife Monthly 'Salary' For Housework Reddit Asks, Is This Fair Or Too Transactional?
A man's decision to pay his homemaker wife a fixed monthly“salary” for managing their household has triggered a lively debate on Reddit, with users discussing financial independence, unpaid domestic labour and what equality should look like in a marriage.
The discussion began after a Reddit user revealed how his elder brother, a government officer, manages finances with his homemaker wife. According to the post, the woman takes care of most household responsibilities, including cooking, cleaning and managing the family's everyday needs. What makes their arrangement unusual is that her husband gives her a fixed amount every month specifically to recognise her contribution at home.
The Reddit user explained his brother's reasoning in detail:“I found out recently that my brother gives her a fixed amount of money every single month specifically to recognize her housework. He doesn't see it as "her duty as a wife" to just do everything for free. His logic is basically: if they hired a maid, cook, or home manager to do all this, they'd have to pay them market rates. So why should the labour suddenly be worth ₹0 just because a spouse is doing it?”

The payment, however, is separate from the family's normal expenses. Groceries, bills and other household costs are handled independently by the husband. The monthly amount given to his wife is her personal money, which she can spend, save or use as she chooses. She can also support her parents with it without seeking permission.

The arrangement prompted the Reddit user to question whether this could be a healthier approach to financial independence for homemakers.“I've never really seen an Indian couple handle finances this way before. Usually, it's either a joint account or the husband just hands over money whenever she asks for expenses,” the user wrote.
The central question was also put directly to Reddit:“Do you think this is a healthy way to give a stay-at-home wife financial independence and validate her labour? Or does it make a marriage feel too transactional, like a job?”
Many users welcomed the concept, arguing that homemakers work throughout the day without the financial recognition attached to paid employment. One commenter said,“Sounds better than the wife doing all the household chores and still not being appreciated for it in some way.”
Another user supported the idea, writing,“I like this idea for years, female chores is not considered work and somewhere or other it gives man authority whenever wife asks husband for money.. this gives wife a confidence that yes this is my money i have earned it and that confidence all it..Hats off to your elder brother...”
The discussion ultimately raises a broader question: should household work be viewed as an unpaid marital obligation, or should couples find ways to formally recognise its economic value? For many Reddit users, the answer appears to depend on whether the arrangement provides genuine autonomy, respect and equality rather than simply putting a price tag on marriage.
