Meow Wolf Los Angeles Unveils 39 Local Artists For 2027 Debut

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Meow Wolf Los Angeles has announced the 39 local artists who will contribute to its upcoming immersive art installation, slated to open in January 2027. This marks a significant step for the collective, which began focusing on the city two years ago.

The L.A. venture will be situated in a former movie theater within the HHLA shopping center in West L.A. The organization plans to open an East Coast location in New York after the Los Angeles debut. Meow Wolf currently operates five installations across the United States, including its flagship in Santa Fe, which opened in 2016. Other locations include Omega Mart in Las Vegas, which launched in 2021, a Denver installation opened the same year, and two Texas sites, one near Dallas and another in Houston.

Meow Wolf's in-house creative team consistently partners with local artists to ensure each installation reflects its specific location. Notable past collaborators include Tool album illustrator Alex Gray and his wife Allyson on Omega Mart, and Texas artist Trenton Doyle Hancock in Houston. The 39 artists selected for the L.A. project represent a significant array of art-world talent, featuring figures such as pop-inspired artist Alake Shilling, multimedia artist Jen Stark, and street artist Lauren YS (known as Squidlicker). Surreal sculptor David Altmejd, also part of the L.A. lineup, has been described by Meow Wolf on Instagram as a“dream collaborator.”

To assemble this extensive roster, Meow Wolf engaged several L.A.-based arts professionals, including Bill Dunleavy, co-founder of Superchief Gallery; Dasha Matsuura, former curator at Hashimoto Contemporary gallery; Mason Rothschild, creator of MetaBirkins; Jeffrey Bowers, former programmer for VICE shorts; and independent curator AJ Girard, who also serves as the project's artist liaison.

While the installation's title and specific theme remain undisclosed, Meow Wolf has indicated it will merge its Southwest influences with L.A.'s Hollywood glamour and Southern California aesthetic, presented through diverse media such as painting, ceramics, installation, and digital art.

The full list of artists includes: Wayne White, Gabriela Ruiz, Everything is Terrible!, Jen Stark, Charles E. Dickson, Lauren YS, David Altmejd, Seth Bogart, Estevan Oriol, Killer Acid, Bunnie Reiss, Shrine, Alake Shilling, Sharif Farrag, Wizard of Barge, Harlan Hue, Ozzie Juarez, Corinne Loperfido, Nick Toll, Blake Kathryn, Elrod, Evelyn Tan, Greg Ito, Hana Ward, Joe Holliday, Angus Oakes, Devin Reynolds, S.C.
