Hans Op De Beeck Explores Memory And Time In“Vanishing Point” Exhibition

(MENAFN- USA Art News) A new solo exhibition by Hans Op de Beeck, titled“Vanishing Point,” is set to open at Almine Rech, featuring his signature monochromatic sculptures. The exhibition highlights works that delve into themes of meditation and solitude, often characterized by a matte gray coating.

Many of Op de Beeck's sculptures are life-size, depicting tranquil scenes such as a figure seated on a chaise lounge beside a fawn or a framed seascape where detail is conveyed through contrasts in light and shadow. The artist's use of scale, lifelike detail, and diverse subjects like objects, figures, and animals in varied settings creates a“wünderkammer” effect when the pieces are displayed together. Individually, they function as muted curiosities or elements of an unusual narrative.

Works like“Orrery (Loss)” ( 2025 ), a mixed-media sculpture measuring 91 1/2 x 51 x 51 inches, suggest a potential for motion and transformation, reminiscent of cinematic effects. Other pieces include“Cécile” ( 2026 ), a mixed-media, life-size sculpture, and“Seascape” ( 2022 ), made from polyester, metal, and coating. Without color, the focus shifts to the dimensionality and textures of the reliefs and in-the-round objects, maintaining an enigmatic quality.

According to the gallery,“His art does not explain, it suggests.” The exhibition's title,“Vanishing Point,” references the artistic principle where all lines converge in a perspective drawing, with elements disappearing into the distance. A statement indicates that Op de Beeck uses this concept as“a metaphor for those moments when the concrete and rational give way to something less tangible, memory, imagination, introspection, or the feeling of briefly slipping outside time.”

“Vanishing Point” opens on September 10 and will be on view through November 7 in Brussels. Additional works include“Small Blue Still Life (1)” ( 2026 ), mixed media, 16 x 20 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches;“Autumn Pond” ( 2025 ), mixed media, 45 1/2 x 45 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, an edition of 2 of 3 plus 2 APs; and“Tangerines” ( 2026 ), made from polyester, wood, and coating, measuring 11 x 14 x 2 inches.
