James Turrell's Blue Sea Sky Debuts At Miami's Superblue
Blue Sea Sky activates the ganzfeld effect, a perceptual phenomenon where a uniform, unstructured visual field disorients depth and distance. The German term translates to“complete field.” Turrell's interest in this effect is both conceptual and tangible, influenced by his experience as a pilot since age 16 and his studies in perceptual psychology. His ganzfeld artworks, which began in 1976, typically immerse smooth, plain spaces in vibrant color sequences, creating dazzling and soothing voids.
For Blue Sea Sky, the shifting light conditions honor Miami's shorelines, cycling through rich ocean blues, the lush greens of palm fronds, sumptuous sunset oranges, and the captivating pinks of Miami's Art Deco neon buildings.
The new installation replaces AKHU ( 2021 ), another ganzfeld work that previously occupied the same gallery space with jewel tones. Turrell loaned AKHU to Superblue when it opened in May 2021.“Following the conclusion of that loan period, Superblue commissioned James Turrell to create a new work for the space,” a spokesperson for Superblue stated via email. Superblue, an unconventional non-institution, historically pays artists flat upfront fees for commissions, in addition to offering royalties from ticket sales throughout each work's run.
This marks the fifth new addition to Superblue since its opening. The institution has faced challenges, including a director's indictment, a management shuffle, and setbacks in its initial plan to operate several global experiential art spaces concurrently. Despite this, its commissions, such as Mexican-Canadian artist Raphael Lozano-Hemmer's animate light installation Pulse Topology ( 2021 ), installed in 2023, and French art duo Studio Lemercier's misty laser spectacle Lightfall ( 2024 ), installed in 2024, have consistently drawn visitors.
