Speaking of interesting facts, humpback whales are mammals and can grow to be as big as a bus, reaching lengths of nearly 16 meters. They also belong to the cetacean family and can weigh up to 36 metric tons.

They can live between 60 and 80 years and swim between 5,000 and 8,000 kilometers to Costa Rica, from the icy waters of the Northern Hemisphere in the United States or from the Antarctic Peninsula in the Southern Hemisphere, always in search of warm waters to reproduce and teach their“2-metric-ton calves” survival skills for feeding, leaping, singing, and socializing.

One of these giants of the sea's favorite breeding grounds is located in Costa Rican waters, in Bahía Ballena, Uvita, near the Ballena Marine National Park on the South Pacific coast. To add a little more to the“magic of nature,” this natural sanctuary features a“tombolo”-a sandbar that, when viewed from the air, resembles a whale's tail at low tide.

Without a doubt, the arrival of humpback whales year after year is one of the most unique natural events for domestic and international tourists. To enjoy it in a responsible and sustainable way, the 16th Whale and Dolphin Festival will be held on September 4, 5, and 6 in Costa Ballena, Uvita, in the Osa Peninsula.

Marcos V. Borges, executive president of the ICT, stated that Costa Rica is a destination that always surprises tourists with its unique experiences.“A clear example is humpback whale watching in the southern Pacific off our country's coast during their breeding season and the birth of their calves in Costa Rica's warm waters.”

Borges urged everyone to make the most of the end of this season.“I extend an invitation to all domestic tourists to participate in the Whale and Dolphin Festival, to enjoy sustainable whale-watching tours and a variety of activities for the whole family,” the executive concluded.

“Bahía Ballena is a destination that should be on every Costa Rican's list. It is a natural paradise renowned not only for whale watching but also for the natural beauty of its beaches, mountains, rivers, and waterfalls. For this reason, we want to invite you to this 16th Whale and Dolphin Festival. We'll have cultural, nature-based, and sports activities for the whole family, as well as whale-watching tours at special prices for Costa Ricans,” explained Karol Monge, the festival's organizer.

According to the organizers, there will also be kite-making workshops,“ceviche for everyone,” and free surfing lessons. In addition, there will be a food court and a nature-inspired craft fair, along with an exhibition of a whale sculpture several meters long, made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles.
