Petra Conservation Project Boosts Ecosystems, Local Livelihoods

Petra, Sept. 2 (Petra) -- A conservation project in the Petra region has restored native ecosystems, improved water and energy efficiency, and expanded economic opportunities for local communities, particularly women, as part of efforts to link nature protection with sustainable development.

The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority, in cooperation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), concluded the "Enhancement" project at a ceremony attended by representatives of the Canadian Embassy, the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment, the Royal Botanic Garden and other partners and supporters.

In a statement Tuesday, the authority described the project as a model for partnership in environmental protection and sustainable development, noting that its initiatives combined biodiversity restoration, resource efficiency, women's empowerment and support for the local economy.

The project rehabilitated the forest ecosystem in the Hisha area and replanted juniper trees in their native habitat, contributing to the restoration of native plant species and the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems in the Petra region.

The IUCN also supported the development of the authority's model nursery by installing a solar energy system and constructing a 200-cubic-meter pond to collect and reuse greywater, improving water and energy efficiency while providing a practical model for sustainable environmental practices.

To strengthen local participation and empower women, the project established the "Asila" nursery as a training and capacity-building space, particularly for women learning to cultivate native plants. The initiative aims to turn environmental knowledge into productive skills and economic opportunities.

The project also supported the creation of an e-marketing platform for local products, helping producers reach wider markets, increase the economic value of their products, and connect nature conservation with improved livelihoods and local economic development.

In addition, it contributed to establishing the Southern Women's Network for Nature Conservation, which seeks to increase women's participation in environmental and community work and enable them to play an active role in protecting natural resources and biodiversity and sharing environmental knowledge and practices within local communities.

The authority stressed that its approach to sustainability extends beyond completing projects to ensuring the continuity of their impact, noting that the achievements of the "Enhancement" project will provide a foundation for further cooperation and initiatives in nature conservation and local community empowerment.
