Brussels Airlines Crew Protest Tel Aviv Flight Policy

(MENAFN) A Brussels Airlines flight from Brussels to Tel Aviv operated as scheduled Wednesday despite a union protest over the airline’s decision to place Israel flights into regular cabin crew schedules.

Belgian trade union ACV Puls said some cabin crew members opposed operating the flight but faced pressure from management to proceed, according to a Belgian news outlet.

Brussels Airlines resumed flights between Brussels and Tel Aviv in recent weeks, initially relying on volunteers and management staff. Some of those employees normally work in office-based roles but also hold flight duties.

Since the start of September, Tel Aviv flights have reportedly been added to standard crew rosters alongside other destinations, prompting renewed opposition from the union.

ACV Puls argues that management breached previous agreements with unions covering flights to Israel. The union submitted a strike notice Tuesday, seeking to give employees the option of declining Tel Aviv assignments over safety concerns.

"We have information that there are people carrying out the flight against their will, but they didn't dare refuse because management would sanction it," Jolinde Defieuw of ACV Puls told local media.

"The employer has pulled out all the stops," she added.

The airline, however, said staff had been notified about the scheduling change several weeks in advance.

Management also challenged the union's strike notice, arguing that ACV Puls had failed to follow the required procedure for launching such action.

The union rejected that position, saying the dispute does not amount to a collective strike and that individual employees retain the right to take industrial action.

Representatives of management and the unions are due to meet Thursday morning in an effort to resolve the dispute over Tel Aviv assignments.
