France Backs Germany Sanctions Over Leipzig Attack
(MENAFN) France will support German sanctions proposals over the alleged hybrid attack at Leipzig Airport and push for additional penalties against vessels linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Wednesday.
Speaking before an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland, Barrot voiced “full solidarity” with Germany over the incident, which Berlin has attributed to Russia.
He said the attack formed part of a wider Kremlin effort to destabilize the European Union, interfere with democratic processes and undermine European support for Ukraine.
“We will not allow an act of such gravity to go without consequences,” Barrot said. “We will support the sanctions proposals put forward by Germany. We will also propose sanctions against a number of vessels belonging to the shadow fleet.”
Barrot said he had summoned Russia’s charge d’affaires in Paris to deliver a formal protest after receiving evidence from German authorities.
The evidence, he said, pointed to “an intention to sabotage this aircraft and this logistics site,” which Germany and other European countries had used as part of their support for Ukraine.
Leipzig Airport is a major cargo hub and an important logistics center for military shipments, including Ukrainian Antonov flights. Officials have characterized the disrupted operation as an attempt to interfere with the supply network supporting Ukraine without carrying out a conventional military attack.
German authorities told media that the Aug. 4 attempt targeting a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft was more serious than initially believed. The drone was reportedly equipped with explosives, while investigators later determined that multiple drones had been involved rather than a single aircraft.
Russia has denied accusations of assassinations, sabotage, drone incursions and espionage in countries supporting Ukraine, instead accusing Western governments of promoting “anti-Russian paranoia.”
Barrot Calls for New EU Measures on Palestine
Turning to the situation in the occupied West Bank, Barrot said France would seek additional EU sanctions against individuals responsible for violence and other actions there.
He also said Paris would press the European Commission to block goods produced in illegal settlements from entering the European market.
In addition, Barrot proposed sending a mission to Palestine as early as September to help prepare for presidential and legislative elections.
He said elections would give Palestinians an opportunity to select leaders who could act as “fully legitimate interlocutors” with the international community.
