US Backs Germany After Alleged Russian Airport Attack
(MENAFN) The United States has voiced support for Germany following an alleged Russian-backed drone attack targeting Leipzig Airport, as concerns grow over hybrid threats against NATO members.
US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said Washington stood firmly behind Germany and other members of the alliance following recent incidents described as attempts to disrupt infrastructure and create instability on NATO territory.
"The United States stands in solidarity with Germany and all Allies in the face of efforts to cause harm and chaos on NATO territory," Matthew Whitaker wrote on X.
Whitaker also stressed the importance of strengthening NATO's defenses against emerging threats.
"We remain committed to NATO’s collective defense and clear-eyed about the need for Allies to increase their capabilities to deter all threats to the Alliance."
His comments came a day after Germany accused Russia of orchestrating an attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport last month and announced a broad package of measures and sanctions targeting Moscow.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said Tuesday that investigators had determined the operation was planned by Russian intelligence services and executed by lower-level operatives.
The airport, one of Germany's major freight centers, also serves as an important logistics hub for military cargo, including Ukrainian Antonov aircraft. German officials have characterized the thwarted attack as an effort to interfere with the flow of support to Ukraine without resorting to a conventional military strike.
Moscow has repeatedly denied allegations involving assassinations, sabotage operations, drone incursions and espionage targeting countries supporting Ukraine. Russia has instead accused Western governments of fueling what it calls "anti-Russian paranoia."
