Germany Signals Openness to Russia Talks Despite Drone Attack Row
(MENAFN) Germany declared Wednesday that it remains open to de-escalating tensions with Russia, even as it stands by accusations made just a day earlier that Moscow orchestrated an attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport.
Speaking on the sidelines of an informal gathering of EU foreign ministers in Wicklow, Ireland, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed his willingness to "resume reasonable talks with Russia as well." Still, he stressed the onus is on Moscow to prove it, too, is ready for dialogue, according to a German press agency.
Ahead of talks with his EU counterparts, Wadephul also pressed for a firm and proportionate response to Russian aggression. "We have formed a well-founded opinion and judgment and have drawn the necessary conclusions," he said.
Wadephul placed direct blame on Moscow for escalating the standoff through what he described as a hybrid attack. "And Russia must now live with these consequences," he said.
The remarks follow Germany's Tuesday announcement accusing Russia of masterminding last month's attempted drone strike on Leipzig Airport — a claim accompanied by sweeping new diplomatic measures and sanctions against Moscow. At a Berlin press conference, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said investigators had determined the operation was planned by Russian intelligence services and carried out on the ground by low-level operatives.
