NATO's Rutte Warns Russia Growing 'Increasingly Reckless'
(MENAFN) NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte issued a stark warning Wednesday, declaring that Moscow's behavior has become markedly more dangerous as incursions into allied airspace mount and hostile operations on NATO soil intensify.
Speaking alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a joint press briefing in Brussels, Rutte said: "Russia has grown increasingly reckless as they continue their terrible war against Ukraine. We have seen more drones and missiles crossing into our airspace along our eastern flank, creating increased risk."
According to Rutte, both NATO and the European Union are working "around the clock" to shield their citizens from escalating threats.
The alliance chief also pointed to a string of hostile acts he said were aimed squarely at NATO territory — among them, suspected arson attacks on factories manufacturing defense equipment bound for Ukraine, and what he termed a "hybrid attack" carried out in Leipzig, Germany.
Pushing back firmly against any notion that Russia's tactics might fracture allied unity or erode backing for Kyiv, Rutte insisted: "The dangers Russia poses are clear."
For her part, von der Leyen confirmed that German authorities have traced responsibility for a foiled plot to sabotage cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport — using military-grade materials — directly back to Russia.
"We will not tolerate it. We stand in full solidarity with Germany," she said.
The Commission president further signaled that Brussels is ready to tighten sanctions on Moscow and shut down loopholes Russian actors have been exploiting. She revealed that Ukraine has submitted a fresh funding request worth several billion euros to bolster its air defense network — including additional Patriot missile systems — a proposal now under review by EU member states.
The comments follow a Tuesday announcement from Germany's Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, who formally attributed a failed drone attack at Leipzig Airport last month to Russian intelligence services, saying the operation had been orchestrated by Russian handlers but executed by low-level operatives on the ground.
Leipzig Airport serves as a critical freight hub and logistics gateway for military shipments, including cargo flights operated by Ukraine's Antonov airline.
Moscow has repeatedly denied involvement in assassination plots, sabotage campaigns, airspace violations, and espionage across countries supporting Ukraine, instead accusing Western governments of fueling "anti-Russian paranoia."
