France Takes UN Security Council Helm, Vows Justice-Based Order
(MENAFN) France stepped into the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, marking the start of its September term with a promise to keep global conflicts, required reviews and thematic debates at the top of the agenda.
Paris also used the moment to renew its backing for multilateral cooperation as the UN General Assembly's high-level sessions get underway this month.
French UN Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont laid out the Council's September work plan at a news briefing, framing his country's turn at the helm around a "commitment to multilateralism and to ensuring that commitment translated into a successful presidency for this month."
"We will strive for an international order based on law and justice," Bonnafont said.
Greece takes over the Council presidency in October, when the gavel next changes hands.
