Iran Downs US MQ-9 Drone Over Central City Khomein

(MENAFN) Iranian air defenses shot down a US MQ-9-type drone Tuesday over the central Iranian city of Khomein in Markazi province, semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

Media said the aircraft was struck by Iranian defense systems but offered no further details on the incident.

The downing follows an announcement from US Central Command confirming that American forces had launched strikes on targets tied to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, adding to a rapidly intensifying exchange between the two sides.

The confrontation is the latest flare-up in a conflict that has kept Tehran and Washington at odds since fighting broke out with strikes on Iran in late February. A framework agreement, negotiated through Pakistani and Qatari mediation, followed in June, but tensions never fully eased. By July, the US had launched a two-week bombing campaign and reimposed a naval blockade amid disputes over navigation rights through the strait.
