Putin Says Russia Keeps Ukrainian Leadership Out of Strikes for Future Talks
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin says Moscow is refraining from targeting Ukraine’s political and military leadership because Kyiv would need representatives capable of taking part in potential negotiations.
“We need some people for negotiations ... if they understand that they want to resolve issues peacefully,” Putin said during a news conference in Bishkek following the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
He warns that Russia would take action if Ukrainian authorities continue what Moscow considers terrorist activities.
Putin says Russian forces have been instructed to prepare for and conduct large-scale attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in response to what he describes as ongoing Ukrainian strikes on civilian infrastructure and Russian fuel and energy facilities.
“They strike ours, they will receive a response,” he said, claiming that numerous drones tried to penetrate air defenses around Moscow and St. Petersburg overnight and hit civilian facilities, including oil refineries. According to Putin, three refineries came under attack.
He also says Russian troops are accelerating their advance across the battlefield in Ukraine, citing what he describes as the current military situation.
