Israeli Opposition Leader Threatens Legal Action Against Sara Netanyahu
(MENAFN) Israeli opposition leader Yair Golan issued Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife, Sara Netanyahu, a 24-hour ultimatum Tuesday, demanding she apologize and walk back comments suggesting he had advance knowledge of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack, warning he would pursue a lawsuit if she declined.
The clash erupted after Sara Netanyahu told Israeli media on Monday that Golan had been near the Gaza Strip in the attack's earliest hours.
"When you are a senior-ranking military officer like this and claim that you were fighting on Oct. 7, you had been there since the early morning, dressed and ready," she said, speaking directly to Golan. She further claimed he had arrived in the area "very early," while others, "including the prime minister," remained unaware of what was unfolding.
Golan, a reserve major general in the Israeli army, served as deputy chief of staff from 2014 to 2017 and later as deputy economy minister from 2021 to 2022.
In response, Golan sent Sara Netanyahu a formal legal warning demanding an apology and retraction within 24 hours, saying he would file a defamation suit seeking damages if she failed to comply.
"An apology within 24 hours and compensation that will be donated to the Nova festival survivors or a lawsuit for 2.5 million shekels ($826,000)," Golan wrote on the U.S. social media platform X.
He branded her remarks a "false conspiracy," accusing her of attempting "to rewrite October 7, turning those who went out to save lives into traitors and those who abandoned Israel's security into victims."
"We will not allow them to erase the truth and the heroism of the fighters, the volunteers, and the civilians who stepped up when the government collapsed," he added.
Golan further vowed that, should his party enter the next governing coalition, he would "establish a state commission of inquiry (into the attacks), expose the truth, and find those responsible for the failure."
Israel launched what has been described as a genocidal campaign against Gaza on Oct. 8, 2023, a day after the Palestinian resistance group Hamas carried out a cross-border raid into Israel. The war raged for two years, leaving widespread devastation, while Israeli violations have reportedly persisted despite a ceasefire in effect since Oct. 10, 2025.
As of Tuesday, Israel's assault on Gaza had killed approximately 73,462 Palestinians and wounded 174,509 others, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
