Sudan Army Vows 'Without Stopping' Push Into Darfur

(MENAFN) Sudan's army will push forward "without stopping" in the war's next phase, its Chief of Staff Gen. Yasir Al-Atta declared Tuesday, vowing to drive troops into the western Darfur region.

Al-Atta delivered the message while reviewing troops from the 14th Brigade, special forces units, the Operations Authority and the "Western Forces," according to a statement issued by the army.

"The movement in the next phase will be without stopping for all forces, whether those stationed or on the front lines," Al-Atta told the assembled troops. "We are fighting to protect civilians, not out of revenge, because we are a professional national army, not the Rapid Support Forces militia."

He accused the Rapid Support Forces of carrying out "systematic killings" across cities and regions — including El Geneina, El Fasher and Blue Nile state — "on an ethnic basis," while also recruiting child soldiers. The army's statement did not identify where the troop inspection took place, and the Rapid Support Forces did not respond to Al-Atta's allegations.

Pledge to Push Into Darfur
Al-Atta committed to directing forces toward Darfur. "We assure our people in Darfur that we are coming to protect them from the violations of the rebel militia and provide security and stability, as enjoyed by the other states that have been cleared of the rebellion," he said.

The remarks come as fighting rages on multiple fronts across Sudan, including throughout the Kordofan region's three states — North, West and South Kordofan — where clashes have continued without pause since Oct. 25.

Sudan has been engulfed in war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, a conflict that has killed tens of thousands and displaced roughly 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
