CENTCOM: Over 50,000 US Troops 'Vigilant' After Iran Strike Wave
(MENAFN) American forces have finished carrying out a series of strikes against Iranian military targets, the US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Wednesday.
"U.S. forces struck Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets including air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets and facilities, mine laying capabilities, and communications site," CENTCOM said in a post on X.
The command said the operation was carried out in response to "recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members."
CENTCOM added: "More than 50,000 U.S. service members are currently operating across the Middle East and remain vigilant, lethal, and prepared to continue executing operations directed by the Commander in Chief."
The confirmation followed an earlier announcement from CENTCOM that it had launched strikes on IRGC targets across Iran. Shortly after that initial statement, Iranian media outlets reported hearing explosions on Qeshm Island and in the cities of Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Chabahar and Konarak.
Iranian state television also reported that Jiroft Airport, in Kerman Province, had been struck.
Ahmad Nafisi, deputy governor of Hormozgan Province, said earlier that preliminary assessments showed at least four people killed and 50 wounded after the US allegedly targeted a wedding ceremony.
