Israeli Police Chief Warns Settler Violence Brands Nation 'Thugs'
(MENAFN) Israel Police Commissioner Danny Levy has cautioned that violence carried out by occupiers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank is damaging Israel's international standing, warning that such attacks have left the world viewing the country as one of "thugs and criminals," according to Israeli media reports Tuesday.
An Israeli newspaper reported that Levy "sharply addressed settler violence and nationalist crime in Judea and Samaria (West Bank) during a closed-door conversation," cautioning about the reputational harm it inflicts on Israel abroad.
According to the paper, Levy said: "There is a handful whose sole purpose is ‘to come and attack Palestinians,’ the newspaper quoted Levy.
He continued: "As a result, Israel is perceived worldwide as a nation of thugs and criminals. The Americans are fed up - it's doing image damage,"
The report did not identify the setting of the meeting or the audience Levy was addressing.
In a separate development, Israel's public broadcaster reported Tuesday that the army pulled a field commander from his post after footage surfaced showing him arriving alongside soldiers who accompanied occupiers surrounding Palestinian homes in the West Bank town of Qusra three weeks earlier. Footage of soldiers praying together with the occupiers was widely read internationally as a sign the Israeli army was backing the occupiers rather than shielding Palestinian civilians under attack, the broadcaster said.
Parts of the occupied West Bank have seen a surge in recent days in attacks by occupiers against Palestinians, their property and their livelihoods, compounded by ongoing Israeli military raids and operations.
Since launching its military campaign in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, Israel has stepped up operations against Palestinians in the West Bank, a period that has also seen a parallel rise in settler violence.
Roughly 750,000 Israeli occupiers currently live across 141 illegal settlements and 224 outposts in the occupied West Bank, including some 250,000 residing in 15 illegal settlements in occupied East Jerusalem, according to Palestinian figures.
