Pentagon Exodus Deepens as Army Secretary Driscoll Steps Down

(MENAFN) Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned, becoming the latest in a lengthening string of senior Pentagon and military officials to leave their posts under President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Driscoll, once viewed as a rising star within the administration, chose to step aside amid worries over the military's condition and a relationship with Hegseth that had grown increasingly tense, media reported. He follows Navy Secretary John Phelan out the door — Hegseth removed Phelan from his post in April.

The churn reaches well past civilian leadership at the Pentagon. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George retired in April, just weeks after the Iran war broke out and more than a year ahead of his scheduled term's end. Gen. Christopher Donahue, who commanded US Army forces across Europe and Africa, announced in July that he was leaving after Hegseth reportedly blocked attempts to extend his time in the role.

Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. James Mingus likewise exited before completing the customary three-year term. According to the Washington Post, he was steered into early retirement once Trump put forward Lt. Gen. Christopher LaNeve as his successor.

The wave of departures took shape early in Trump's second term. In February 2025, Hegseth ousted Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. CQ Brown Jr., Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti, and Air Force Vice Chief Gen. James Slife. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin subsequently announced his own retirement partway through his term.

A number of other senior figures have also left or been dismissed, including former SOUTHCOM commander Adm. Alvin Holsey, NSA and Cyber Command chief Gen. Timothy Haugh, and Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse.
