Woman Among Two Held In Bengal's Murshidabad With 1 Kg Heroin
According to the police, the arrested persons have been identified as 60-year-old Sadhana Haldar and Taibur Rahman. They hail from the Lalgola area of Murshidabad.
Acting on a tip-off, the STF personnel conducted a raid and recovered the contraband from their possession.
A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, has been registered against the duo. The investigation is underway to trace the source of the heroin and identify others allegedly involved in the drug trafficking network.
The accused were produced before the court on Wednesday. An application will be made for their police custody to interrogate them further, the police said.
"Two persons, including a woman, have been arrested on charges of possessing heroin. They will be interrogated to know more about the drug trafficking ring in the district and especially in the India-Bangladesh border area. Efforts are on to find out who else is involved in this. Investigation is on," said a senior officer of the West Bengal Police.
It may be noted that the Kolkata Police recovered a huge amount of banned drug cocaine from the Karaya area in Kolkata and arrested three drug traffickers in July this year.
According to the police, a large amount of foreign drugs is being smuggled for rave parties in different parts of the city, and cocaine is in high demand among them. The police recovered 104 grams of cocaine worth more than Rs 10 lakh. Three drug traffickers named Azaharuddin Khan, Mohammad Ashfaq and Latafat Khan were caught red-handed by the police.
In the same month, two Thai women were arrested in Kolkata for allegedly possessing banned narcotics. They had reportedly arrived in the city posing as tourists, but authorities suspected that they intended to smuggle the drugs.
The STF sleuths of the Kolkata Police arrested the two women hailing from Bangkok from the Bhowanipore area of south Kolkata in possession of a banned drug named ecstasy.
