Nearly 5,200 Israeli Settlers Storm Al-Aqsa in August, Report Says
(MENAFN) Israeli forces killed two Palestinians and detained 114 people, including five children, in occupied East Jerusalem last month, as more than 5,000 Israelis pushed into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, the Jerusalem Governorate said Tuesday.
The governorate's monthly report put the number of incursions at 5,209 for August, describing a pattern of sustained, escalating entries by Israeli settlers and Jewish religious rituals carried out inside the compound and near its gates — all under Israeli police protection.
The single largest daily surge came on Aug. 13, when 751 settlers entered the site in one day, according to the report.
Israeli authorities also issued five separate orders during the month barring Palestinian citizens from entering Al-Aqsa, the governorate said.
Israeli police have permitted such incursions since 2003, a policy the Islamic Waqf Department in Jerusalem — the body that administers the site — has consistently rejected. The Waqf insists Al-Aqsa is a Muslim holy site exclusively and has repeatedly called for the entries to stop.
On the military front, the governorate's tally showed two Palestinians killed, 83 wounded, and 114 detained, five of them minors. Separately, it documented 44 attacks carried out by settlers against Palestinians and their property.
Demolitions also continued at pace: the report recorded 40 operations to raze or clear homes, structures and land across Jerusalem, alongside 86 demolition or stop-work notices issued during the month.
The figures emerge as Israeli media report that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is working to stoke tensions in a bid to shore up support from far-right coalition partners ahead of Knesset elections set for Oct. 27.
Palestinians say the incursions form part of a broader Israeli campaign to "Judaize" occupied East Jerusalem, including the Al-Aqsa compound, and to erode its Arab and Islamic character. They regard East Jerusalem as the intended capital of a future independent Palestinian state.
The report adds to a pattern of escalating Israeli raids, arrests and settler violence across West Bank cities, towns and refugee camps — including Jerusalem — since Israel launched its military campaign in the Gaza Strip in October 2023.
