22,000 Flee Sudan's Blue Nile as Fighting Escalates
(MENAFN) Roughly 22,000 people have been driven from their homes in Sudan's Blue Nile state over the past week as violence intensifies in the Geissan district, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Tuesday.
OCHA said ongoing violence is endangering civilians and pushing thousands into flight. "In Blue Nile State, local authorities report that nearly 22,000 people may have been displaced in the past seven days due to escalating fighting in the locality of Geissan," the agency said, adding that "many are sheltering in schools or have fled to other areas, including towards the state capital, Ed Damazine."
A local aid group, the Geissan Emergency Room, said Sunday that nearly 20,000 people had fled the Medina 12 area of the Geissan district amid the fighting and deteriorating security.
Blue Nile has seen violence flare anew over the past two days, with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its ally, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, launching attacks across several parts of the state.
OCHA also reported that Saturday attacks on villages north and northwest of El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, resulted in casualties and further displacement, with reports of looted civilian property and livestock.
The agency described a separate incident in West Darfur: "In West Darfur State, civilians were reportedly killed and injured when a drone strike hit a fuel market in Adekong, near the border with Chad, last Thursday. The attack also damaged civilian property."
OCHA repeated its call for all sides in the conflict "to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, respect international humanitarian law, and allow humanitarian organizations to operate safely and independently."
Separately, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Monday that 450 people were displaced in a single day from the village of al-Qardud Abu Zeid in North Kordofan's al-Rahad district due to worsening security.
Beyond Blue Nile and Darfur, fighting has raged since Oct. 25 across Sudan's three Kordofan states — North Kordofan, West Kordofan and South Kordofan — pitting the army against the RSF.
Sudan has been gripped by war between the army and the RSF since April 2023, a conflict that has killed tens of thousands and displaced roughly 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
