Rain Lashes J&K More Showers Expected Today

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Rainfall lashed several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, with the Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecasting intermittent showers across many areas on Wednesday and cautioning that brief intense spells could trigger flash floods, mudslides and landslides at vulnerable locations.

Fresh showers were reported from Pahalgam, Shopian, Kulgam, Pulwama, Bandipora and parts of Budgam and Kupwara, while several areas of the Jammu division also received rainfall.

According to the Meteorological Centre, Katra recorded 62 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours among regular meteorological stations, while the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) network recorded 73 mm at Kathua.

Poonch received 38.5 mm, Udhampur 27 mm, Reasi 21 mm, Samba 11 mm, Rajouri 10.5 mm and Kathua 60.2 mm, according to AWS data.

Other recorded rainfall included 5.5 mm in Pulwama, 2.5 mm in Ganderbal, 2 mm in Anantnag, 0.5 mm in Doda and 0.5 mm in Kulgam. No rainfall was recorded at the AWS stations in Kishtwar during the period covered by the bulletin.

The weather department has forecast generally cloudy weather on September 2, with one or two spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places.

Brief intense to heavy showers are likely in the Jammu division during the early morning and late afternoon or evening hours.

On September 3, generally dry weather is expected, although brief showers may occur at a few places.

Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely at many places on September 4, accompanied by brief intense showers.

From September 5 to 12, generally dry weather is expected across Jammu and Kashmir, although brief spells of rain or thundershowers may occur at isolated to scattered places, particularly during the early morning and afternoon hours.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has cautioned that brief intense showers at isolated locations during September 1 and 2 could trigger flash floods, mudslides and landslides.
People have been advised to remain cautious in vulnerable areas, particularly in locations prone to flooding and landslides.

Farmers, however, have been advised that they may continue harvesting and other agricultural operations.

Temperatures remain above normal
Despite the rainfall, temperatures remained above normal in several parts of Kashmir.

Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius, which was 4.1 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 20.9 degrees, nearly five degrees above normal.

Qazigund recorded a maximum of 31.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 18.6 degrees, while Pahalgam recorded 27.6 degrees and 17.5 degrees, respectively.

Kupwara recorded a maximum of 33.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 18.4 degrees, while Kukernag recorded 31.4 degrees and 18.2 degrees.

Gulmarg, among the cooler stations in the Valley, recorded a maximum of 22.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 12.2 degrees. Konibal recorded 33.2 degrees and 19.4 degrees.

In the Jammu division, Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of 33.9 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.2 degrees, while Banihal recorded 29.6 degrees and 20.5 degrees.

Batote recorded 28.2 degrees Celsius as the maximum and 19.1 degrees as the minimum, while Katra recorded 29.1 degrees and 22.6 degrees. Bhaderwah recorded 30 degrees and 18.2 degrees, and Kathua 34.8 degrees and 23.4 degrees.

AWS data showed Jammu at 34.1 degrees Celsius maximum and 26.9 degrees minimum, Udhampur at 33.6 and 24 degrees, Samba at 32 and 24.9 degrees, Ramban at 28.5 and 21 degrees, and Poonch at 33.4 and 20.6 degrees.

In Kashmir, AWS stations recorded maximum temperatures of 32.4 degrees Celsius in Srinagar and Awantipora, 31 degrees in Budgam, 30 degrees in Baramulla, 32.4 degrees in Bandipora, 32.7 degrees in Pulwama, 31.8 degrees in Shopian, 29.6 degrees in Kulgam and 30.5 degrees in Ganderbal.

Sonamarg recorded a maximum temperature of 25.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 14.9 degrees.

The weather department said rainfall activity is expected to decline after the current spell, with generally dry conditions likely to prevail over much of Jammu and Kashmir from September 5 onward.
