Hamas Urges Mediators to Press Israel Over Gaza Ceasefire Violations
(MENAFN) Hamas said Tuesday that it had reached out to mediators and Nikolay Mladenov, representative of Gaza's Board of Peace, urging pressure on Israel to end what it described as escalating violations in the Gaza Strip and to abide by the ceasefire agreement.
The group said the outreach followed an Israeli military operation in Gaza accompanied by airstrikes that killed and wounded Palestinians. Hamas said its leadership strongly condemned a "criminal operation" carried out by Israeli forces in Gaza, along with the accompanying attacks and bombardment that left Palestinians dead and wounded.
The group said it had asked mediators and guarantors to exert "maximum pressure" on the Israeli government to halt the attacks, honor the ceasefire, and fulfill its obligations under the agreement. It also called for a "clear and strong" international stance condemning the attacks, warning of the consequences should they be allowed to continue.
Hamas said the Israeli escalation was intended to undermine the ceasefire, derail efforts to complete its implementation, and create the conditions for a resumption of Israel's war on Gaza. It said the continued attacks placed an urgent responsibility on mediators and guarantors to intervene and prevent Israel from pushing the situation back toward wider conflict.
Earlier Tuesday, three Palestinians were killed and more than 20 others, including children, were wounded in intensive Israeli strikes on the Al-Katiba area west of Gaza City, medical sources told Anadolu. Witnesses said more than 16 strikes were carried out in under 30 minutes, accompanied by heavy Israeli gunfire and intensive activity by warplanes and drones overhead.
Ismail al-Thawabta, director-general of Gaza's government media office, said an Israeli special forces unit had attempted to carry out a security operation inside the city but was detected, prompting the Israeli army to provide air cover. He said the operation resulted in Palestinian deaths and injuries, as well as the deaths of several members of the special forces unit.
The Israeli army, for its part, said it had struck "a number of targets" in Gaza City to "remove threats" to its forces, and denied that any of its troops were injured. Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israeli forces had detained a "senior Hamas leader," though he did not identify the individual.
Al-Katiba is among the most densely populated areas for displaced Palestinians in western Gaza, home to the American Hospital, universities, and commercial businesses — a concentration that heightens risks to civilians and has triggered panic among residents and displaced people living in tents in and around the area.
Israel's military campaign in Gaza began on Oct. 8, 2023, and continued for two years, causing widespread destruction; Palestinian officials say Israeli violations have persisted despite a ceasefire that has been in effect since Oct. 10, 2025. Those violations have killed 1,318 Palestinians and wounded 4,375 others, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, with rescue teams recovering hundreds of bodies from beneath the rubble.
As of Tuesday, the ministry said the death toll from Israel's campaign in Gaza since October 2023 stood at approximately 73,462 Palestinians, with 174,509 others wounded.
