Peru Cuts Diplomatic Ties With Iran Amid Middle East Tensions
(MENAFN) Peru announced it has severed diplomatic relations with Iran, citing escalating tensions across the Middle East.
The Foreign Ministry said the decision rests on Peru's "historic commitment to peace," alongside its respect for international law and its defense of democracy.
Peru said it had watched with growing concern "the deterioration of democratic values in Iran," pointing specifically to "the repression of peaceful demonstrations, the curtailment of freedom of the press, discrimination against women and girls, and the persecution of political opponents."
The ministry also voiced concern over disruptions to international trade through the Strait of Hormuz since March, warning of possible fallout for global energy prices and supply chains. Peru further rejected what it called Iran's "incitement to violence and the escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, as well as its obstruction of the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."
The move comes amid renewed military tensions between Iran and the United States, with an exchange of strikes deepening instability across the region and stoking fears over the safety of shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite the diplomatic break, Peru said consular relations with Iran would remain intact to protect the interests and nationals of both countries, in line with the relevant Vienna conventions.
Lima communicated the decision to Tehran through a diplomatic note delivered via Iran's embassy in Ecuador, which also serves as its concurrent mission to Peru.
